By studying biology in the DP students should become aware of how scientists work and communicate with each other. While the scientific method may take on a wide variety of forms, it is the emphasis on a practical approach through experimental work that characterizes the sciences. Teachers provide students with opportunities to design investigations, collect data, develop manipulative skills, analyse results, collaborate with peers and evaluate and communicate their findings.
The IB DP Biology standard level (SL) course contains six main topics (Duration 95 Hours), an optional topic (Duration 15 Hours) and a practical scheme work (Duration 40 Hours).
The assessment model of biology SL consists of three papers. Paper 1 is a 45 minutes exam which contains 30 multiple-choice questions weighing 20% of the final grade. Paper 2 is a 1.25 hours exam which contains data-based, short answer and extended-response questions; weighing 40% of the final grade. Paper 3 is a one hour exam which contains data-based, short answer and extended-response questions; weighing 20% of the final grade. The individual investigation is of 10 hours duration and weighs 20% of the final grade.

Paper 2 is a 2.25 hours exam which contains data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions; weighing 36% of the final grade. Paper 3 is a 1.25 hours exam which contains data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions; weighing 24% of the final grade. The internal assessment is of 10 hours duration and weighs 20% of the final grade.
