IB PYP Core Learning Support
The IB Primary Years Programme helps young students become curious, confident and independent learners. In the PYP, children learn through inquiry, communication, reflection, real-world connections and transdisciplinary learning rather than only through isolated subject practice.
At Baccalaureate Classes, our IB PYP Core Learning Support course is designed for students from PYP 1 to PYP 5 who need structured one-to-one academic support across the main areas of PYP learning. The course supports PYP Mathematics, English / Language, Unit of Inquiry, Science connections, Social Studies connections, ATL skills, learner profile habits, homework, classwork and portfolio tasks.
This is not a PYP exam course and it is not a short-term booster. It is a structured 30 to 70 hour core support programme, usually completed over 3 to 7 months, for students who need stronger foundations, clearer schoolwork, better inquiry participation and more confidence in everyday PYP learning.
What Is IB PYP Core Learning Support?
IB PYP Core Learning Support is a personalised online tutoring course that helps primary years students strengthen academic foundations while learning in a way that matches the PYP approach. It supports school learning without replacing the school programme of inquiry.
Every PYP school may organise units differently. Our tutors therefore adapt the support according to the student’s grade, current unit, school expectations, learning gaps and confidence level. The focus is to help the child understand, express, reflect and participate more actively.
| Core Academic Support | Inquiry and Skill Support | School Learning Support |
|---|---|---|
| PYP Mathematics foundations | Unit of Inquiry understanding | Homework and classwork guidance |
| English reading and writing | Research and note organisation | Portfolio task improvement |
| Speaking and listening confidence | Reflection and presentation skills | Support based on current school units |
| Science and Social Studies connections | ATL and learner profile development | Parent-friendly progress direction |
PYP Framework Note for Parents
The PYP is a flexible, inquiry-based framework. This means schools do not always follow the same textbook sequence or unit order. A student may study communities, systems, living things or expression at different times depending on the school’s programme of inquiry.
For this reason, our course does not claim to follow one fixed universal syllabus. Instead, it provides structured support across the key areas young PYP learners need: Maths, Language, inquiry, research, reflection, communication, learner agency and confidence. The tutor connects these skills to the child’s actual school units and tasks.
Who Should Join This Course?
This course is suitable for PYP students who need steady academic support over a focused period of a few months. It is especially helpful for children who are capable but need patient guidance, stronger habits and more confidence while learning in the PYP environment.
| Academic Needs | Inquiry Needs | Confidence Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Needs support in PYP Maths or English | Finds Unit of Inquiry tasks confusing | Hesitates to speak in class |
| Struggles with reading comprehension | Needs help asking better questions | Needs support with presentations |
| Finds writing or sentence building difficult | Needs help with research and reflection | Needs encouragement to attempt challenging tasks |
| Needs help organising homework | Struggles to connect ideas across subjects | Is adjusting to an IB PYP school |
How This Course Is Different from the PYP Booster Course
The IB PYP Core Learning Support course is broad and structured. It is completed over 3 to 7 months and supports the main areas of PYP learning. The PYP Booster Course is shorter and will focus on selected weak areas, urgent improvement or important school tasks.
| IB PYP Core Learning Support | PYP Booster Course |
|---|---|
| Broad support across PYP learning areas | Shorter support for selected weak areas |
| Usually completed over 3 to 7 months | Usually completed in a shorter focused period |
| Supports Maths, English, Unit of Inquiry and portfolio tasks | Targets quick improvement in priority areas |
| Best for steady academic development | Best for urgent confidence-building |
| Builds foundations, habits and classroom participation | Strengthens specific gaps before important tasks |
IB PYP Core Learning Support Structure
The IB PYP Core Learning Support course is designed for students who need structured guidance across the main areas of PYP learning. Since the PYP is inquiry-based and transdisciplinary, the course supports more than isolated subject practice. It helps the child develop across Mathematics, English / Language, Unit of Inquiry, Science connections, Social Studies connections, ATL skills, learner profile habits, homework, classwork and portfolio tasks.
Parents may choose support in one area, such as Mathematics or English, but the recommended hours below are designed for a balanced multi-area support plan completed over approximately 3 to 7 months.
| PYP Level | PYP Level Recommended Support | Suggested Weekly Rhythm | Main Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| PYP 1 | 30 hours | 2 hours per week | Build early reading, number sense, listening, speaking and classroom confidence |
| PYP 2 | 40 hours | 2 hours per week | Strengthen basic Maths, writing, vocabulary, inquiry habits and communication |
| PYP 3 | 50 hours | 2 hours per week | Improve comprehension, problem-solving, paragraph writing, research and reflection |
| PYP 4 | 60 hours | 2 hours per week | Build stronger independence, written responses, inquiry depth and portfolio quality |
| PYP 5 | 70 hours | 3 hours per week | Strengthen upper PYP readiness, presentation, reflection, research and academic confidence |
The recommended hours increase gradually because higher PYP levels involve deeper inquiry, longer written responses, stronger research expectations, more formal presentations and greater learning independence. Younger students need shorter, steady support to build confidence, while PYP 4 and PYP 5 students benefit from more structured guidance across inquiry, language, Maths and portfolio work.

PYP Mathematics Support
PYP Mathematics is not only about calculation. Students need to understand number meaning, patterns, relationships, measurement, shape, data and problem-solving in everyday contexts. Our tutors help children move from memorising steps to explaining how and why a method works.
PYP Mathematics Focus by Level
| PYP 1 | PYP 2 | PYP 3 | PYP 4 | PYP 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Counting and number bonds | Place value and operations | Multiplication and division | Fractions and decimals | Fractions, decimals and percentages |

| Comparing numbers | 2D and 3D shapes | Graphs and tables | Data interpretation | Geometry and measurement |
| Time and daily Maths | Pattern rules | Problem-solving steps | Mathematical reasoning | Data, graphs and explanation |
Students learn to solve word problems, explain thinking, reduce careless mistakes, use diagrams and connect Maths to daily life. This builds both confidence and readiness for higher primary learning.
PYP English / Language Support
Language is central to PYP learning because students use reading, writing, speaking and listening across almost every task. Strong language skills help children participate more fully in Unit of Inquiry, Science connections, Social Studies connections and classroom discussion.
PYP English Focus by Level
| PYP 1 | PYP 2 | PYP 3 | PYP 4 | PYP 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phonics and early reading | Reading fluency | Reading stamina | Inference and detail | Deeper comprehension |
| Sight words and vocabulary | Sentence writing | Paragraph writing | Author’s purpose | Evidence-based responses |
| Listening and speaking | Basic grammar | Summarising | Persuasive writing | Structured paragraphs |
| Picture description | Story sequencing | Descriptive writing | Opinion writing | Presentation skills |
| Simple sentences | Vocabulary building | Main idea and detail | Research writing | Reflection and explanation |
Students learn to read with better understanding, build vocabulary, write clearer sentences and paragraphs, organise ideas before writing and speak more confidently in class.
Unit of Inquiry Support
The Unit of Inquiry is central to PYP learning. Students explore big ideas through central ideas, lines of inquiry, key concepts, questions, research, reflection and action. Some children enjoy inquiry but need help organising thoughts, connecting ideas and explaining what they have learned.
How We Support the Inquiry Process
| Inquiry Stage | Student Support |
|---|---|
| Tuning in | Understand the central idea, activate prior knowledge and discuss what the student already knows |
| Finding out | Ask relevant questions, collect information and use age-appropriate sources |
| Sorting out | Organise notes, examples, vocabulary and early conclusions |
| Going further | Explore deeper connections, perspectives and real-world examples |
| Making conclusions | Explain understanding clearly through writing, speaking or visual work |
| Taking action | Connect learning to meaningful choices, responsibility or community awareness |
| Reflection | Review growth, challenges, feedback and next steps |
Support Across the Six PYP Transdisciplinary Themes
The PYP organises learning through six transdisciplinary themes. Our tutors help students connect these themes to school units, reading, writing, research, discussion and presentation tasks in an age-appropriate way.
| Theme | Student-Friendly Support |
|---|---|
| Who we are | Identity, values, health, relationships, choices and personal responsibility |
| Where we are in place and time | Homes, journeys, history, exploration, timelines and human experiences |
| How we express ourselves | Stories, art, communication, imagination, culture and personal expression |
| How the world works | Nature, science, systems, materials, forces, energy and discovery |
| How we organize ourselves | Communities, systems, rules, roles, work, services and decision-making |
| Sharing the planet | Resources, environment, living things, responsibility, fairness and sustainability |
Science and Social Studies Connections
In PYP, Science and Social Studies often appear inside Units of Inquiry rather than as isolated textbook chapters. Our tutors help students understand these connections through observation, maps, examples, discussions, simple evidence and age-appropriate explanations.
| Level | Science Connections | Social Studies Connections |
|---|---|---|
| Lower PYP | Living and non-living things, senses, weather, plants, animals, everyday materials and care for the environment | Family, community, roles, responsibilities, rules, choices, local environment and celebrations |
| Middle PYP | Life cycles, materials, properties, forces, simple investigations, observations and comparing results | Maps, places, culture, traditions, needs, wants, timelines, landforms and community change |
| Upper PYP | Ecosystems, energy, change, Earth systems, human impact, fair testing and evidence-based explanation | Migration, resources, sustainability, government systems, trade, rights, responsibilities and local-global links |
Homework, Classwork and Portfolio Support
Many PYP students need help completing school tasks with better understanding and presentation. Our tutors support homework and classwork by guiding students through the learning process instead of simply giving answers.
| Task Area | How Tutors Help |
|---|---|
| Homework | Clarify instructions, review Maths steps, improve reading comprehension and help the child complete work with understanding |
| Classwork | Revisit confusing lessons, strengthen vocabulary and prepare the student to participate more confidently |
| Portfolio tasks | Improve organisation, reflection, presentation and explanation of learning |
| Presentations | Help students plan ideas, practise speaking and communicate clearly |
| Written responses | Support sentence structure, paragraph organisation and clearer explanation |
ATL Skills and Learner Profile Development
PYP students need learning skills that help them become more confident and independent. Our tutors develop these skills naturally through subject lessons, inquiry tasks, reading, writing, discussion and reflection.
| ATL Skill | How It Is Developed |
|---|---|
| Thinking | Solving problems, comparing ideas, explaining reasoning and making connections |
| Communication | Speaking clearly, writing responses and using age-appropriate subject vocabulary |
| Research | Asking questions, finding information, organising notes and using sources responsibly |
| Self-management | Planning homework, following routines, completing tasks and reflecting on improvement |

Support for Students Joining PYP from Another Curriculum
Students joining an IB PYP school from another curriculum may be used to textbook learning, fixed answers or direct instruction. PYP learning can feel different because students are expected to ask questions, discuss ideas, reflect and connect learning across subjects.
Our tutors help such students adjust to inquiry-based learning, open-ended questions, Unit of Inquiry tasks, research, reflection, classroom communication and parent expectations around PYP-style learning. This helps children feel more comfortable and confident in the IB PYP environment.
