Social and Cultural Anthropology SL/HL

The IB social and cultural anthropology course offers an opportunity for students to become acquainted with anthropological perspectives and ways of thinking, and to develop critical, reflexive knowledge. Social and cultural anthropology contributes a distinctive approach to intercultural awareness and understanding, which embodies the essence of an IB education. Anthropology fosters the development of citizens who are globally aware and ethically sensitive. The social and cultural anthropology course for both SL and HL students is designed to introduce the principles, practices, and materials of the discipline.

The IB DP Social and Cultural Anthropology standard level (SL) course contains three main parts (150 Hours).

The assessment model of SCA SL consists of two papers. Paper 1 is a one-hour exam which contains three compulsory questions based on an unseen text, covering aspects drawn from the whole syllabus; weighing 30% of the final grade. Paper 2 is a two hours exam in which two questions have to be answered in essay form out of ten questions; it weighs 50% of the final grade. The internal assessment consists of an hour observation followed by a written report of 600-700 words and a critique of the initial report of 700-800 words; it weighs 20% of the final grade.

 

The IB DP Social and Cultural Anthropology higher level (HL) course contains three main parts (240 Hours).

The assessment model of SCA HL consists of three papers. Paper 1 is a one-hour exam which contains three compulsory questions based on an unseen text, covering aspects drawn from the whole syllabus; weighing 20% of the final grade. Paper 2 is a two hours exam in which two questions have to be answered in essay form out of ten questions; it weighs 35% of the final grade.  Paper 3 is a one-hour exam weighing 20% of the final grade. The internal assessment is a report of a fieldwork conducted by the student; it weighs 20% of the final grade.
