Sports, Exercises and Health Sciences SL

The IB DP course in sports, exercise and health science standard level (SL) involves the study of the science that underpins physical performance. The course incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition. Students cover a range of topics and carry out practical (experimental) investigations in both laboratory and field settings. This provides an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to apply scientific principles and critically analyze human performance. Where relevant, the course will address issues of international dimensions and ethics by considering sport, exercise and health relative to the individual in a global context.

The IB DP Sports, Exercises and Health Science standard level SL course contains six core topics (Duration 80 Hours), an optional topic (Duration 30 Hours) and an internal assessment project (Duration 40 Hours).

The assessment model consists of three external papers. Paper 1 a 45 minutes exam which contains 30 multiple-choice questions on core syllabus weighing 20% of the final grade. Paper 2 is a 1.25 hours exam which contains data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions on the core topics, weighing 32% of the final grade. Paper 3 is a one-hour exam based on the optional topic weighing 24% of the final grade.  The internal assessment contains an investigation and a group 4 project weighing 24% of the final grade.
